Memorial Day weekend is the first holiday weekend during the COVID-19 pandemic, aside from the Aries and Taurus who celebrated birthdays within the last few months. Looking forward to it? You should in Newark. As the city and the rest of the country begin to, let’s celebrate this weekend with some cool virtual gatherings.
1. Def Poetry Jam Featuring Mayor Ras Baraka
Mayor Ras Baraka will be joined by Jill Scott, Malcolm Jamal-Warner and more for a “Def Poetry Jam” reunion livestream on Saturday to raise funds for people in need and front line workers in the City of Newark. Before Mayor Baraka was leading our beloved city, he was featured on classic albums such as The Fugees The Score and Lauryn Hill’s, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and making poetic cameos on Def Poetry Jam. This reunion will be recognized as “An Evening of Healing Power & Poetry.” How to Watch? You can watch the event starting at 7 p.m. EST, Saturday, May 23rd on Facebook here or on Twitch here.
2. Attend a Cool Vines Virtual Wine Tasting
Cool Vines hosts weekly wine tastings on Fridays, 4-6 PM. Each week the wine and spirits store brings special guests to discuss matters over a glass of your most in-demand pleasantries. Don’t miss it. It may just entice you to go pick up one for yourself. Cool Vines offers a Memorial Day weekend sale. Get 10% off when you order 3L boxes & 1.5L bags of wine. It doesn’t stop there. You can also get 10% off with 15 and 12 packs of beer.
Host a “Zoomout/” Virtual cookout for friends and family and encourage your guests to support a Newark restaurant. Visit our official Eat Local guide here.
Memorial Weekend is known for its outdoor menu. Bring out the girl and gather with some family and friends on Zoom. A competition for the best BBQ sauce can still happen. You can still enjoy a workout session. Don’t let gym closings stop you. Although the long weekend and virtual gatherings, you can still squeeze in some time to break a sweat.
Play DJ and curate a best of Newark playlist for your zoomout
Become DJ D-Nice on the 1s and 2s. Curate a playlist of your favorite songs and broadcast it live on social media or Zoom. Tell a friend to tell a friend and before you know it, it’s a party.
If hosting a DJ is not the most feasible, join one with prominent NJ disc jokey’s, Lilman and MD.
Although Summer is peaking around the corner, warm weather is not an excuse to dismiss the practice of social distancing. Continue to stay safe and project your surroundings.
