Brick and Martyr is a multi-media exhibition featuring works by Akintola Hanif, photojournalist and Founder and Editor-in-Chief of HYCIDE magazine. The exhibition pays homage to the residents of Newark, New Jersey, and represents the foundation that the Newark renaissance was built upon, which should benefit all not just an elite or chosen few. Hanif’s work also represents the value of documenting our present, images which will serve as stories for future generations, an archive that provides an alternate narrative on how we persevered and lived creatively and courageously. Hanif encourages a culture of compassion and a review of how class and identity constructs fuel stereotypes about poverty and people of color.
