Joshua Bell leads the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in Beethoven’s poetic “Pastoral” Symphony – and performs Wieniawski’s Second Violin Concerto. “Joshua Bell is the greatest American violinist active today,” says The Boston Herald – and in recent years, he has also developed into one of the world’s most accomplished conductors. Currently Music Director for the acclaimed Academy of St Martin in the Fields – the group’s first leader following legendary founder Sir Neville Marriner – Bell and company return with a program that opens on a whimsical note with Mendelssohn’s Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Next, Bell picks up the violin to perform Polish violinist Henryk Wieniawski’s lush Violin Concerto No. 2, one of the greatest violin concertos of the Romantic era. The afternoon culminates with Beethoven’s glorious Sixth Symphony (“Pastoral”), in which the composer paints a musical mural of nature in all its majesty. Join us for the Bank of America Classical Overtures, held an hour prior to each classical concert. These interactive presentations are hosted by Maestro George Marriner Maull of New Jersey’s Discovery Orchestra and are free to ticket holders.
