Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art was founded by a group of young artists over 30 years ago in Newark. As a publicly embedded, radically inclusive creative space—one that is culturally and socially tied to our communities—Aljira promotes cultural hybridity and renegotiation of the boundaries of identity. We promote and present emerging, under-represented and more established practitioners in our field of contemporary art. Our year-round schedule of exhibitions and programs includes film screenings, poetry readings, dance, and music performances. The Aljira Fine Art Auction, held each spring, is a highlight in Newark’s cultural life.
With 15-foot ceilings, adjustable lighting and movable walls throughout it is a flexible space suitable for business meetings, special events and receptions.
