Hot Dates For A Cold Night

HOT DATES FOR A COLD NIGHT

Something special is blooming...Aaaaah, Spring is in the air, oh wait. Not yet. Oh, right LOVE is in the air! With Valentine's Day just around the corner, we thought we would spotlight some fun date ideas. Whether heading out on that memorable first one, keeping the romance alive after all these years, or something in between, Newark offers a diverse selection of activities and exciting options for a night out with that special someone.

Of course, dinner specials abound over the weekend. One of our favorite go-tos, which always does a heartfelt job when it comes to romantic vibes, is Mompou Tapas and Wine Lounge, in the heart of the Ironbound.

Over the weekend (February 14 and 15), they are offering a special Valentine's Weekend three-course Prix fixe menu inclusive of bottle of wine, Cava or pitcher of Sangria (Saturday and Sunday) or guests can choose from the standard menu and daily specials. With the new availability of $5 valet parking, you can spend more time enjoying each other's company inside, and less time looking for the coveted parking spot.

For an intimate date night venue, we adore Maize, located inside the Robert Treat Hotel, downtown Newark. The well-appointed, romantically lit restaurant offers a wide range of menu options, and a parking lot. Conveniently located across from New Jersey Performing Center. Maize will have their eclectic a la carte menu available.

New to the dining scene is Alva, located in Hotel Indigo, on Broad and Edison, behind PruCenter. For Valentine's Day they have a 4 course prix-fixe dinner that includes champagne; as well, their a la carte menu will be available. Call for details or reservations, (973) 718 9533

Check out the restaurant listing on Newark Happening for additional options.

Romance is always the theme at Newark's newest addition to the hotel scene. Hotel Indigo features a Romeo and Juliet Package, complete with Bottle of champagne or sparkling cider, rose petals and decadent house made assortment of chocolate truffles. No minimum stay, and pairs well with any of these other options, or as a standalone night out.

With two highly acclaimed performance venues located downtown in NJ's largest city, there is no shortage of entertainment options to satisfy varying interests. New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) has a strong lineup on the horizon for that week (and always, quite honestly). Kicking off Friday, February 13 with Shaggy, Maxi Priest and Sanchez, followed by Nephew Tommy Comedy Show on the 14th and closing out the official weekend on February 15 with Swan Lake, performed by the State Ballet Theater of Russia.

    PRUDENTIAL CENTER

Leading into Valentines Weekend, you can take in a show with your favorite leading lady, or enjoy a night out with the girls at Prudential Center with "Ladies Night R&B Extravaganza' a special collaboration with NJPAC for a super-romantic R&B show featuring New Jersey's own Jaheim, sharing the stage with Tank, K-Ci and JoJo, Jagged Edge and Avant.

If Latin style is more inline with yours, make it a proper Valentine's night out and check out the swoon tunes of award-winning performer Marc Anthony, on Saturday evening.

Engaging line-ups are in place all month at both venues, so check out the complete event listings, and keep your dates fresh.

We do understand that for some, being among thousands of other people isn't your idea of an intimate evening. For you, we have gathered a couple of hands-on activities that will get you and your date/friends in the same groove.

    Yoga at Washington Park2

One, two cha cha cha...Smiling David Dance School in the Ironbound (90 Elwood Avenue) offers private and group adult Salsa classes (as well as Ladies "styling' classes) for dancers of all levels five days a week. Whether looking for something to do with your group of friends, or your special someone, or just want to have some fun and pick up a move or two, this is one of our favorite options, and it is something

Upcoming class schedule: Monday 7-8:30pm; Tuesday 7:30-9pm; Saturday 4:30-6pm

And finally, what better way to check out your date's flexibility and see what shape s/he is in (or, can get in) than taking a yoga class! Newark Yoga Movement offers a number of FREE on-going classes throughout the city, at various times, so if your flexibility ends on the mat, and you need a daytime date, we've got you covered. If you prefer to heat up your evenings - they offer that as well.

Meet that someone special curtesy of Newark Yoga Movement. Join in on partner yoga at The Clubhouse (205 Spruce Street 6-7pm) on Thursday, February 12. Bring a partner or come by yourself and get paired up. It's a perfect heart opener for the holiday and start sharing joy. No experience necessary.
