Willie Cole: Made in Newark
Curated by M.Gosser.
Thursday, October 12th, 2017 6PM-9PM
CoAD Gallery at NJIT | 367 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd
CoAD Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of Newark native and internationally acclaimed artist Willie Cole. Born in Newark, NJ, Willie Cole is a noted contemporary American sculptor, printer, and conceptual and visual artist. His work uses contexts of postmodern eclecticism, and combines references and appropriation from African and African-American imagery. Finding beauty in the commonplace is one of Willie Cole’s strengths. His ability to rejigger the consumer world around us into something more fantastic creates the illusion that his art springs from the mystical intersection of folk culture, utility, design, contemporary art, and mythology. This exhibition will focus on Willie Cole’s large-scale sculpture/installations which use recycled plastic bottles in creative and expressive ways. There will also be older works on display to illuminate the path Mr. Cole has taken to get to this point in his career.
