    Arts In Newark

Creators wanted! Applications are now open for ArtStart, Newark Arts’ annual mini-grant program. ArtStart provides grants to non-profit organizations and individuals to create music, dance, theatre, film, visual and literary art projects that benefit the residents and neighborhoods of Newark. Winning proposals will be awarded grants ranging up to $3,000 each.

Begun in 2001, ArtStart is designed to act as a catalyst for cultural activity that is either not available, sporadic, or available only in limited supply within Newark’s arts community. A selection committee representing a broad spectrum of the community considers all proposals. Since its inception, Newark Arts has made over 150 ArtStart grants, totaling more than $400,000.

This year in particular, applicants who offer early learning programming are encouraged to apply.  “Children from ages zero to five need the arts too! We’re delighted that ongoing support from the Turrell Fund will help us bring learning opportunities to our youngest residents,” said Newark Arts Executive Director Jeremy Johnson. Since 1981, Newark Arts has been advancing and expand the resources and offerings of arts and cultural organizations in the great city of Newark, with the mission to power the arts to transform the lives of those who work, live and play here.

    Newark Arts

Newark Arts serves as the anchor and umbrella for the arts community providing programs, services, advocacy and outreach that supports over 60 arts organizations throughout the city.  Representing many, but telling one story, Newark Arts exists to improve the quality of life for Newark artists, arts organizations, and residents through sustainable initiatives that provide living wage jobs, improve education leading to greater levels of college readiness, increase the tax base, and create greater civic engagement.

ArtStart is a huge part of this mission, as the mini-grants awarded have funded schools of music and dance, local galleries, film and book projects, programs for children and seniors, and multidisciplinary community initiatives including neighborhood development plans.
