Big notes bring big hope at Whitney’s Houston’s former house of worship. The New Hope Baptist Church is where she got her start, belting out gospel songs and hymns in the choir. This breathtaking edifice opened in in 1903; today all are welcome to enjoy services or church programming.
The Blue Mirror Restaurant and Lounge is urban chic. Looking to unwind with cocktails and live jazz…this is the place. Enjoy a flavor fusion of Soul, Italian and American Cuisines. Their specialties include catfish, chicken and ribs combo, and the crab cakes.
Find inspiration at Bethany Baptist Church Jazz Vespers. At 6pm on the first Saturday of each month, world-renowned jazz artists can be found raising spirits through music. Enjoy light refreshments afterwards, with an opportunity to meet and greet the artists. This historic church has been serving the community since 1870. Get into the gospel spirit at Metropolitan Baptist Church offering concerts and choral performances.
Dickie Dee’s started a revolution. This old school eatery is famed for its Newark Italian hot dog which is piled high with peppers, onions and potatoes, fried then wrapped in Italian bread that has been baked in a pizza oven. Their dogs have been featured on the Cooking Channel. Are you up for the double dog challenge?
Looking for a late night snack? Try on the aptly named Belly Buster from JJ's Hot Dog Truck, a Newark institution for over 30 years. These dogs are a contender for the best in the state.
CityPlex12 is a slam-dunk. Catch a flick at Shaquille O’Neal’s supersized cinema. Feel like an MVP, Shaq DX offers a bigger than life Digital-Xperience with 300 leather seats, a 47 foot wide screen and a smoking sound system.
Serving up big sandwiches and bargain prices is Cooper’s Deli. Known for their pastrami, this unfussy establishment is a carnivores delight, and is conveniently nestled inside a liquor store. Looking for a great Jewish Deli? Bragman's Delicatessen and Restaurant has been supplying the community with mouthwatering morsels since the 1930s. This old school establishment has been serving up slices of heaven to the community for quite some time.
