Growing up in Newark, New Jersey, it may take a while to truly appreciate all the history and culture you are surrounded by, it's a vibrancy you may notice when you visit other places. The Latino community here has played a significant role in the shaping of our city's identity, and mine. From the earliest groups to settle in Newark to the latest, traditional flavors of Latin America to modern twists on classic dishes, Latino-owned businesses in Newark and the surrounding areas offer a culinary journey that is yes, delicious, as well as save you hours on flights. Here’s a list of just some Latino-owned spots that are worth a visit and a handful I simply love.

Cuba Bakery
Step into this cozy bakery and enjoy a taste of authentic Cuban pastries, freshly baked each day. From flaky pastelitos to sweet guava treats, every bite will transport you to the vibrant streets of Havana.

El Merengue
La casa del mangu y el mofongo. Whether the buffet for lunch or stopping by for the bar or lounge for a live performance, this Dominican restaurant is located in North Newark opposite Technology High School yet it will make you feel like an old-school familiy function.
El Rincon Latino Restaurant

A little taste of their Latin roots, Downtown Newark and two blocks from Prudential Center and Military Park. Serving vegetarian dishes as well as a kids' menu.
